My family moved to Mason City in 1984. We came from a small parish church and were looking for a church family with new opportunities to serve God. My first impression of the church was that of awe. We were overwhelmed with the beauty of windows in the sanctuary, the friendliness of the congregation and the inspiration of the music. We have been members for over 20 years and I continue to find new wonders in the creation window, friends with every new member and insight in our musical heritage.
But the church is not just the windows or the building. We joined because we wanted a family experience, a place where our children could grow in their faith. Our history has taken us through three pastors. Each pastor brought new ideas to the congregation. The congregation has grown in faith, built on to the church and added new programs for every age.
One of the best activities that my church has is the mid-week Refuel intergenerational program. The children of our congregation have a great role model in our new youth director, Nate Ruge. On Wednesday night the youth gather to learn from each other, enjoy fun activities, participate in vespers and eat a meal. While we refuel with a congregational meal we also refuel with the enthusiasm in their faith.
We each bring our talents to the church family. I have found my niche on the promotion and publicity committee, my husband serves as a leader for adult forum, and we both enjoy singing in the church choir and participating in small groups.
Everybody has their own level of participation and can find experiences to enhance their faith journey. I hope you make First Presbyterian Church your home. Come join our family!
