There is no question that financial support is important in the world we find ourselves in. Wars are fought over it, lives are lost in the pursuit of it, families are devestated by the lack and excess of it, people consume their lives in the desire and management of it, and churches lose focus in pleading for it.
The history of the church universal and the Bible teach more about the issue of money than about many other topics. The right understanding of money and the right behavoir with money is crucial to following God in the way of Jesus.
At First Presbyterian it is our desire that our congregation would live according to how God calls us. This includes:
- not consuming all we have
- giving our money to the efforts of God's kingdom including special concern for areas of mission
- joining our resources together
- making commitments to tithe 10%
Pledges are not the only way to support the church. Through the Special Needs and Endowments the church continues to meet other needs. The main responsibilities of this committee are:
- investing endowment and special needs monies
- reviewing requests for use of special needs funds and making recommendation to the Session
- overseeing acknowledgment of gifts and memorials and the recording of them in the Gift Book
- ascertaining that gifts are used as designated
- serving as the Gifts Committee for unsolicted gifts of tangible property
- educating church members as well as officers about the funds
- planning Wills Emphasis Sunday activities
The endowment funds are permanent funds where the gift or assets is invested and only the interest/dividend income used. Income is received quarterly and placed in the Special Needs Fund.
The Special Needs Fund is not a permanent fund. The principal and income will be disbursed as designated by the donor of for special needs and opportunities that lie beyond the operating budget of our church.
Gifts and bequests, which can be given to either fund, fall into two classifications: undesignated and designated. Designated gifts are gifts that are restricted as to their use. The use must be one approved by the Session.
