Dominating the whole picture is simply the symbol of spiritual light, the spiritual essence of life. This occupies the center of the upper two panels and touches earth.
For this symbol the artist sought a sunburst of a new kind with a different message from the usual sunburst. To arrive at the language the language or vocabulary of this message the artist studied various sources of light in rays and reflections to get the feeling of how light works, what kind of patterns it makes. He squinted at the sun and looked at it thru dark glasses and after a time would see moving forms and patterns. A dancing web of iridescence would appear and disappear around the central source of light. The central source itself tended to swim and the circles to overlap in brilliance. Sometimes it seemed that dark centers would appear.
Thus this sunburst is a composite of all these forms and patterns, a vocabulary of light and how it is seen. It is a harmony of abstract light with many patterns of light and iridescence surrounding overlapping and expanding semicircles which seems to illuminate the whole composition of creation, dominating it and yet being a part of it.
As the last act in the story of creation God created Man his own image and gave him dominion over the earth. (Genesis 1:27-39) This is an immensity of power. The artist conceives of abstract light, one of the highest symbols, as a symbol of spiritual man with this vast amount of power.
John said of Christ, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:9) Christ said, “I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
So this abstract light is a symbol of Christ the Truth, of Christ, God’s gift of Life.
Finally, this symbol of abstract light which crowns the entire composition is the closest the artist could get “to that Divine Mystery which is the Mystery of Life and the center, the heart and the soul of the Creator.”
